Moves to ease Kilcullen car parking crisis

KILCULLEN, 20 September 2002: An increasingly difficult parking problem in Kilcullen could be solved if discussion between Kildare County Council and the local cattle mart have a positive outcome.

The difficulties of finding a parking space in the town have been exacerbated by the rapid increase in population with burgeoning development in the area, following the connection of the town to the county sewerage system.

But KNN has learned that there are discussions ongoing between Leinster Marts and Kildare County Council for the provision of parking facilities at the mart on most days of the week.

The mart is only used on a Wednesday, and ample car parking facilities (above) are possible close to the shopping end of the town on other days.

But the property would have to be tarmaced and lined, as well as having lighting installed. There are also likely to be insurance considerations to be solved.

Another idea mooted infomally is the conversion of part of the former Cross and Passion property adjacent to the town into car parking, with a possible income for the local Cross and Passion College.

This would involve the ecovering of grass areas (below), and a considerable number of cars could be parked in a very secure way. A suggestion that a fee of two euros could be charged has been made.
