Plan calls for many new organisations

KILDARE GENERAL, 2 April 2002: by Brian Byrne. No less than 10 new organisations or committees are to be set up in County Kildare if the ‘action’ proposals of the Kildare 2012 plan are carried through.

The plan, which was launched last week, is an economic, social and cultural blueprint for the county over the next 10 years. It was designed by the Kildare County Development Board.

Among the organisations proposed is a County-level Transport Group to coordinate and maximise urban and rural transport services and infrastructure throughout Kildare. It is envisaged the Group will then come up with a County Transport Plan.

The plan also envisages the coordination of an ‘inter-disciplinary team of workers from various relevant agencies, to deliver local Capacity Building, Support and Counseling Services for people experiencing exclusion.

A ‘County-wide Steering Committee’ is proposed, representing ‘relevant interests’ to draw up a marketing and development strategy promoting Kildare in order to take advantage of major international events as opportunities for inward and other investment.

A Heritage Officer is also to be appointed to draw up a county Heritage Plan and Strategy. A County Museum Working Committee will be established to identify and acquire artifacts and information, and to identify possible sites for a County Museum. A County Arts Network is also proposed.

A County Youth Forum is to be established out of a Steering Group charged with developing a strategy and guidelines for such a forum. A ‘counselling support service’ for ‘learners and educators’ is also to be established.

A Volunteer Bureau is suggested as needed to, among other things, produce employer mentoring schemes to encourage volunteerism.

Finally, a sub-group of the Kildare County Development Board is to be established to ‘advise KCDB on emerging regional issues’ and to discuss Kildare’s role with other CDBs and Regional Authorities.
