Councillor counters car park suggestion

LEIXLIP, 26 August: by Bill Trapman. An eight-storey car park/apartment block located on an elevated site in Leixlip 'would be unacceptable', according to local councillor Catherine Murphy. She says the site is at the rear of Main Street and 'would dominate and fundamentally change' the character of the village.

"While we need car parking, it can't be at any price," Cllr Murphy says. "The same site was the subject of a study of car parking possibilities and one suggestion in the report was the introduction of a new street in that area with perhaps a two- or three-storey car park on the lower elevation of the site.  What we have got is, in my opinion, an economic rather than a planning response to the towns car parking needs. I am already getting a lot of support for the position I have taken on this issue."

Earlier this month, another local councillor, Paul Kelly, appealed for what he termed 'a reasonable approach' to the matter.
