Leixlip Spa cleaned up

LEIXLIP, 9 August: by Bill Trapman. The historic Spa near Leixlip's Louisa Bridge has been cleaned up following an agreement with Kildare County Council to pay for the cleanup. Tons of waste were taken from the site by a contractor brought in by Leixlip Town Commission.

The work has been welcomed by Cllr Paul Kelly, who said he hoped that 'unscrupulous people' who had dumped material there in the past would now desist from doing so.

“Leixlip Town Commissioners have been calling for a cleaning operation at Louisa Bridge for some years now," he said.  “We even tackled some of it ourselves on our first 'Broomsday' in 1999 but it was obvious that machinery would have to be brought in to remove the amount of rubbish that had accumulated there over a long period.  I am delighted that the County Council agreed to pay for the clean-up after the county manager paid a visit to the site with the town clerk some months ago.”

The range and content of the waste removed was quite shocking, and included domestic refuse, builders rubble, machinery, furniture, timber, steel and litter of all sorts.  "The place is completely clean now and is much safer for the traveller families who are temporarily accommodated nearby while awaiting housing in Leixlip. I am told that the travellers are pleased with the results also and that they will co-operate with us in keeping the place clean."

The County Council has erected warning signs and they will prosecute litter louts caught dumping at Louisa Bridge.
