Call for closure of 'illegal' waste facility

MAYNOOTH, 20 September 2002: A call for the closing down of what he terms an ‘illegal waste separation facility’ at a site at Blacklion, Maynooth, has been made by local Labour TD Emmet Stagg.

This follows the rejection by Kildare County Council of an application for planning permission for light industrial units and a waste processing unit at the site.

The rejection came following objections by the residents association of the nearby Parklands estate, as well as representations by local councillor John McGinley and Deputy Stagg.

Deputy Stagg, also a Kildare county councillor, now wants the council to shut down waste processing activity at the site.

The application, by Brian Flood, was rejected on the grounds of a number of reasons, the first of which says that ‘intensive waste processing and recycling are prohibited where they are deemed incompatible with neighbouring residential properties’.
