Residents oppose shopping centre plans

NAAS, 27 December 2001: by Trish Whelan. Morrell Residents Association have asked Naas UDC to refuse a material contravention for Hazlemark Development Ltd that would allow a district shopping centre on the Monread Road.

Their estate is directly across the road from the proposed site.

A deputation comprising Gay McManus, Mark Kavanagh and Michael Carruth (left) said traffic is their No. One concern. They told councillors: “It’s not on. The infrastructure can’t cope with any more commercial traffic.”

They feared the project could bring another 2,000 cars a day onto the road with residents competing with trucks delivering goods to get in or out of their estate - ‘juggernaut traffic right up to our front doors, day and night’.

Mark Kavanagh said the road is too congested as it is and will get even worse when Millennium Park opens. “It’s got very limited access and that artery at the back of Naas will be clogged by cars day and night,” he said.

Gay McManus and Michael Carruth said it’s difficult enough to live on the Monread Road with vehicles coming up it from all over the county. They said the volume of cars from the 900 parking spaces in the development would add further problems to people trying to get in and out of their estate.

The residents would prefer to see the first section of the development used for housing, with the second area for commercial/industry use.
