Name chosen for housing estate

NAAS 14 February 2003: The name Radharc an Chaisleáin has been selected for Naas Town Council’s social and affordable housing estate on the Caragh Road.

Cllr Seamie Moore said the new estate is in full view of three castles in the locality. He said there had been ‘a ferocious’ battle in the area in 1878, just after the ‘new’ bridge had been built over the canal. He felt it would be would be an opportunity to record the battle in the town.

Mayor Timmy Conway said a competition had been held in local schools to come up with a name for the new estate and councillors had gone through the list of suggestions.

Naas town clerk Declan Kirrane said solicitors require a name for the scheme for legal documents for mortgage applications.

There will be three parts to the estate - the ‘affordable houses’ crescent, and two sections of social housing. Add-ons such as Avenue, Drive or Crescent can be added later.

During the discussion Cllr Pat McCarthy said he favoured an Irish name for the scheme and Radhairc an Chaisleáin was agreed.
