Treat to block bypass

NAAS, 10 May 2002: by Trish Whelan. A call for local residents to block the Naas By-Pass has been made by Naas town councillor Mary Glennon, in protest at the EPA’s decision to increase the Waste Licence for KTK Landfill Ltd (above) from 220,000 tonnes a year to 275,000 tonnes.

Cllrs Glennon and Pat McCarthy say the decision will mean even more dump truck convoys trundling through the town.

Both Kildare County Council and Naas Town Council formally objected to the application by KTK.

Cllr Glennon said the element of surprise was crucial for any protest, as advance notice given for a protest in the town last November allowed truck drivers were able ‘to take evasive action’ and avoid the town

There have been a number of fatalities in Naas in recent years involving pedestrians and trucks.
