Narraghmore band return to winning form

NARRAGHMORE, 14 May 2002: by Bill Trapman. Narraghmore Pipe Band returned to winning form on Saturday 11 May by taking first place in their grade at the Malahide Piping & Drumming Festival at Malahide Castle, Co Dublin.

This is the band's first major victory since being upgraded to Grade 3A as a result of winning the European and World Championships in Grade 3B in 1999.

Their were 35 entries in the contest, 12 of which were in their grade, including bands from the Irish Pipe Band Association and the Northern Ireland Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

Lord Edward's Own Narraghmore Pipe Band have a full competitive programme ahead of them in the coming months including the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton, Scotland on Saturday 18 May, the All Ireland Championships in Kilkenny on 6 July, the World Championships in Glasgow on 10 August, The Ulster Championships in Derry on 24 August and many other contests in Northern and Southern Ireland.

The band have recently purchased a new set of Andante drums for their 10 strong drum corps and are currently seeking sponsorship from local and national businesses. The band's annual flag days are on Friday 28, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June, when members will collect outside supermarkets, churches and in bars throughout the county. This collection is the band's main source of income apart from performance fees.

The band are currently planning a major piping and drumming event, which it is hoped will take place later in the year in Kildare. Anyone interested in registering for the limited number of places still available in their piping and drumming beginners classes, starting in September, should contact the band immediately.
