Councillors, officials, visit Oldtown Gardens

NAAS, 25 September 2002: Naas councillors visited the gardens at Oldtown Demesne recently to see exactly what will be taken over by the town at some date yet to be confirmed.

It was given to the Council by developers Lehmex International through the town's 1999 Development Plan and consists of a large section of woodland with walkways, a river and waterfall, a huge octagon pond and half of the area known as 'the long pond wetlands' which borders Mill Lane.

Councillors and officials were invited to walk the area with Major John de Burgh who with his wife has a lifetime interest in the house and gardens.

Former county architect Niall Meagher was on hand to identify the boundaries from maps provided. However, no entrance to the Council's garden was identified on the map provided.

The area concerned is defined by the darker line border but does not include the shaded wetland section.

The gardens will eventually be open to the general public; however people will only be allowed in on certain days.
