Council cleaning up sewerage spill

15 August 2003: Workmen from Naas Town Council have this morning spread extra peat moss around the grass area at Lakelands estate, the scene of a huge sewerage overspill two days ago (above).

Eddie Hubbard of Naas Town Council outdoor staff explained the work undertaken is in line with proper environmental standards. The dampened moss will absorb any germs left on the grass, he said. The procedure will be repeated tomorrow. The moss dries into dust which can be swept up.

He said the lakes are being monitored and the lwater is to be tested.

After examining the various ground levels in the effected area, Mr Hubbard said the sewerage had burst through at the lowest point level which was the grass area in front of the hospital gates. The hospital ground is at a higher level.

Asked by a local resident if it would happen again, he said with road works due to happen there shortly, a chamber could be put in with a sealed cover.

Mr Hubbard came in for considerable praise when he knocked on one door in Lakelands this morning close to where the incident occurred. “You’re the first person from the Council to tell us what’s happening,” he was told. He said he had only ‘come on this job this morning’.

Pictured left is some of the solids residue left in the Lakelands estate the morning after the spill.
