Accessibility Tips

This website has been designed to be accessible to all visitors, regardless of disability. The following tips will help you get the most out of this site.

To view the website using your own stylesheet, in Internet Explorer 5+, go to Tools, Internet Options, Accessibility, select Format documents using my stylesheet, Browse for your stylesheet, select Open, select OK

Increasing text size

To increase the size of text in Microsoft Internet Explorer, select View - Text Size - Larger/Largest or click on the Larger font option on bottom right hand side of page

A print-friendly style sheet that makes every page on the site print out very nicely.

Visual design

This site uses cascading style sheets for visual layout.

All font sizes are relative, and can be increased using user-specified "text size" option in visual browsers.

If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets at all, the content of each page is still readable.

You can view a 'text only' version of the site by clicking on 'View TEXT-ONLY version' on the bottom, right hand side of the webpage under 'Accessibility'

Bypassing Navigation

For users with screen readers, we have provided skip links to jump over collections of links and go straight to content. These links are invisible to sighted users.

Press Home to go to the top of the page

Using the Tab Key to jump between links - if you are using a keyboard, try using the TAB key to skip from link to link. All navigation and forms provide a logical order for this.

To go to the contact page press Alt+3 and then Return
To go to the email page press Alt+9 and then Return
To go to the help for accessiblility press Alt+m and then Return

Documents on this site

Some of the information on this website is available in PDF format to provide for easier reading and printing offline.  The PDF format is not always accessible (except in the case of PDF documents created with the latest Adobe Acrobat software). Certain documents were created before this software was available.  PDF documents on this site require Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded here: Adobe Acrobat Reader

We have, where possible, provided the same document in Microsoft Word format.

As part of our ongoing work to make this site accessible to all our users our News and Whats On around the county are now in HTML format rather than word/pdf documents.

Site Structure

Our Primary 'Links' to all Kildare Library and Arts Service services and information and  are located along the top bar, these are consistent throughout the site.

Below these links are 'breadcrumbs' which indicate where the user is on the site.  The search facility is to the right of these breadcrumbs.  Our search facility is on every page of the website.

On the left hand side of each page offers 'quick' links to a section depending which part of the site your are in.

You can also navigate the site via the Site Map, or search the site for the information you are looking for.

Known issues

The site is designed in accordance with priority 1, 2, and 3 guidelines of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and the Irish National Disability Authority Guidelines for Web Accessibility. For example, the website uses cascading style sheets for visual layout. This ensures that content is perfectly linearised and improves performance on a wide range of browsers and other user agents.

Pages are designed to validate as DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional. There are a number of remaining validation errors, but work is ongoing to fix these.

Most of the documents on the website are in pdf or word format and work is ongoing throughout the organisation to make this information available eventually in structured HTML format so that is accessible to as wide an audience as possible.

Maintaining accessibility

Kildare Library and Arts Service is committed to maintaining and monitoring the accessibility of this website. The site is audited at regular intervals.
