Thomas Nelson launched his book Through Peace and War: Kildare County Council in the Years of Revolution, 1899-1926 in Áras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas. 21 October. 1916 Sackville Art Project created 262 individual crafted model houses for each civilian killed in the Rising. The art project was launched in Athy Heritage Centre and travelled to other venues across the country, including outside the GPO. It was devised by Athy artist Ciara O’Keeffe and developed with Aisling Moran, Maggie Owens and Sharon Harris Byrne. 23-24 October. Two concerts performed by Mona Conroy, Owen C. Lynch and Showstoppers at Naas Town Hall to commemorate the centenary of Percy French’s performances there. 24 October. Kildare Federation of Local History Groups Annual Seminar, Kilcullen Town Hall. Guest speaker was Adhamhnán Ó Súilleabháin who gave a presentation on his grandfather, Domhnall Ua Buachalla, 1916 veteran. 25 October. The unveiling of a statue to John Devoy at Poplar Square, Naas, marked the official start of Co. Kildare’s centenary commemorations. Mayor of Kildare Cllr. Brendan Weld and US Ambassador Kevin O’Malley unveiled the statue whom P. H. Pearse called the ‘greatest of the Fenians’. The erection of the statue was a joint collaboration between the John Devoy Committee of the Kildare Association, New York, the County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee and Naas Local History Group. The County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Programme was launched in McAuley Place, Naas, by Chair of the Co.
