Shackleton Gardens - but not in Athy!

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar joined representatives of Fingal County Council in Clonsilla, Dublin 15 on Friday last- 15th June- to launch plans for the full restoration of the ‘Shackleton Gardens’. 

The walled gardens measure 1.5 acres in size and were created over 200 years ago by David Shackleton, relative of the Athy Polar Explorer Ernest.

The local council have plans to fully restore the gardens to their original glory as a tourist attraction - adjoining the Royal Canal. The gardens were once listed as being in the top 100 gardens in Britain and Ireland.

Locally in Athy, the Athy Heritage Centre Museum in conjunction with Kildare County Council is advancing plans for a major redevelopment of the former Town Hall to become an Ernest Shackleton theme museum.
