Diving
Sunday August 25 & Wednesday August 29
I am away examining at the Leading Diver weekend in Smerwick this Sunday and while Liam Staunton has offered to organise diving and dry cox'n we don't have anyone available with an EC1 driving licence to tow the boat so diving is looking unlkikely at this stage. I will however organise diving in Dun Laoghaire next Wednesday evening, weather permitting. Due to shorter evenings and holidays this will most likely be the last Wednesday evening dive for this dive season.
New Club Diver
Congratulations and well done to David Berney who passed his D** (CMAS Club Diver) test in Dun Laoghaire last night in all but favourable conditions. The 1m viz conditions did not faze the well experienced trainee who put in a great performance and passed the test with ease. This is a great testament to someone who only started diving over a year ago and hopefully a budding instructor for the club in the future.
Sunday July 1
With timing of tides a little difficult for Wexford and the viz being much improved I opted for diving Dublin Bay. Diving the South tip of Dalkey Island in the morning and the Guide Me 2 in the afternoon. It is not often that you get such great viz on the Guide Me 2 as you could see the wreck without any artificial light.
Sunday May 24
Two great dives off Slade on the Girl Arleen and 3 Mile Rock with a full boat and the visability after improving from last week. We were joined by a few friends from the UCD club who also enjoyed the days diving.
Sunday 17th June
Diving Sunday was out of Kilmore Quay with our first dive on the west side of the Conningmore Rock. While the visability was not wonderful at only 2-3m, it was a glorious day of sunshine at sea and lunch on the Great Saltee Island before having our second dive on the Girl Arleen in the afternoon.
June Bank Holiday Weekend - Kilkee.
Kilkee provided almost all the ideal conditions for excellent diving on the June Bank holiday weekend. For those lucky enough to get down early the weekend kicked off with a dive on the Pinnacle on Friday evening. With brilliant sunshine and jewel anemone covered sheer walls the Pinnacle was a spectacular dive to kick off the weekend. Some even broke that 40m limit for the first time in their diving career. The easterly winds provided calm seas all weekend which made the rain acceptable on the Sunday. All the hot spots got dived : The Pinnacle, Middle Rock, Outer Rock, Diamond Rocks & Birthy More were dived with each dive site better than the last. 15Mt+ visibility was common making dives to 40mt seem like tropical dives if only the water was a little warmer!
We finished up with a 40 minute dive on Birthy More on Monday morning & what a finish to an excellent weekends diving that was with even a Crayfish making a guest appearance.
Sunday May 27
It was certainly another great days diving out of Kilmore Quay. The 9.30am early start paid off when it enabled us to get slack for both dives and a lunch on the Great Salte in glorious sunshine. It was also the first opportunity this season to dive the wreck of the Idaho. The Conningmore rock was alive with shoals of large pollock and Mark's friends, those very inquisitive seals were once again trying to borrow our fins.
Sunday May 20
With sunshine and flat calm seas, conditions could not have been better for diving 3 Mile Rock and the Girl Arleen on Sunday May 20! The brilliant colours of the jewel anemones on 3 Mile Rock and the shoals of fish on the Girl Arleen were breathtaking - great diving!. It was a welcome change in the recent weather and will hopefully last for the summer.
May Bank Holiday Weekend - May 5th -7th
The weather was kind to us in Valentia Is. for the May Bank Holiday weekend while the east coast got battered with easterly winds. We got five excellent dives with visability up to 15+ meters on some dives. Diving out of Portmagee on the Saturday we got two great dives on the jewel anemone covered wall on Coosdermoda. On the Sunday we dived the spectacular Illaun na Iasc (Island of the fish) which certainly lived up to it's name and the Basalt Cliffs on the westerly side of Beginish Is.in the afternoon. Monday we had to return to sneak one last dive from the ever changing weather on Illaun na Iasc before heading home. A most enjoyable weekend was had by all!
Sunday April 29
With all Irish coastal waters experiencing gale force wind over the weekend the only alternative dive site was Portroe Quarry. 10 x NSAC members turned up on the day and got dived up for the upcoming Bank holiday weekeend. Many old friends from Blackwater SAC & Dalkey Scuba Divers were also present which made it an enjoyable day out with plenty of craic!
Easter Bank Holiday - Kilkiernan Bay
Despite the enormous spring tides with a range of 5.2m range we managed to get 4 x boat dives over the weekend, finishing up with a relaxing shore dive on Coral Beach on Monday morning. It was a babtisimal of fire for some of the new trainees but the instructors were well impressed by their determination and how well the coped with the difficult conditions.
