Big Telly Theatre Company presents -
The Playboy of the Western World by J.M. Synge
Riverbank Arts Centre Newbridge
Tuesday 4th March
8.00pm (Tickets €10/14)
Booking 045 448333
This popular comedy classic tells the tale of ‘ugly young
streeler’ Christy Mahon who arrives in an isolated shebeen
and impresses all with his gory confession. Christy is on the run
after splitting open his father’s head with a shovel and
his story grows with his reputation until the whole town declares
him the champion ‘Playboy of the Western World’. Passions
run high when his tell-and-kiss story wins him local girl Pegeen
Mike, but when a jilted lover and a jealous widow oppose the match,
the plot thickens. A wake, a sports day and a marriage proposal
mean there’s never a dull moment but the sudden appearance
of the person you’d least expect puts the scuppers on Christy’s
plans…
Don’t miss this spirited revival of Ireland’s favourite
comedy classic starring John Hewitt as Pegeen’s father and
directed by Zoë Seaton.
Zoe Seaton’s direction is faultless… John Hewitt, one
of Northern Ireland’s best loved character actors…has
us in his baggy pockets in a trice.”
The News Letter, review of Lovers by Brian Friel, March 1999
Big Telly Theatre Company’s energetic and enthralling playing
of Brian Friel’s Lovers swept one away from a rainy Belfast
as only beautifully written and performed theatre can. It was a
joy to laugh so loudly.
