Host Town: Newbridge
Host to the Japanese Team
Newbridge has won the Bank of Ireland Host Town of the Year Award
because of its energy in preparing to host the Japanese delegation
for the 2003 Special Olympics World Games.
Once
Newbridge discovered it would be welcoming Japan, the community
embraced the Host Town Programme with great passion and worked tirelessly
in preparing for the guests' arrival. Initiatives developed by the
community include a 24-hour Japanese helpline and taking weekly
Japanese lessons.
Newbridge has a great tradition of working with people with special
needs through KARE, and is especially proud of its four local athletes
who will be competing on the Irish football team.
An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern T.D., presented the award at a reception
in the House of Lords, Bank of Ireland, College Green, Dublin, on
May 29.
