An Garda Síochána Centenary Celebrations

Kildare Town 1922-2022

A family friendly day of events will take place in Kildare Town on Easter Saturday, 16 April from 11.45 a.m. to mark the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Civic Guard/An Garda Siochána to Co. Kildare in 1922. The commemorative day has been organised and funded by Kildare County Council’s Decade of Commemorations Committee, An Garda Síochána, An Garda Síochána Retired Members Associationand the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-23 initiative).

Programme of events

10.00-17.00 Garda Museum Open at the Old Courthouse, Kildare. Garda artifacts through the years curated by Tom O’Neill.

11.45 Garda parade, including Garda Band. Starting at Fairview and arriving at Market Square.

12.00 Official Opening Address by An Cathaoirleach, Kildare County Council, Cllr. Naoise Ó Cearúil.

Speakers: Deputy-Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon.

Vice-President Garda Síochána Retired Members Association Marie Roche.

Garda Superintendent Martin Walker.

12.20 Re-enactment of the handover of old R.I.C. Barracks at Cunningham’s Public House by Lord Edward’s Own Re-enactment Group. Followed by march to the site of the former Magee Barracks (Aldi) and then to Garda Barracks for the planting of a commemorative tree.

13.00-18.00 Open Day at Kildare Garda Station. Vintage cars, face painting, etc.

13.00, 14.00, 15.30 Guided walking tours by former Garda P. J. Hester, starting from Kildare Town Heritage Centre.

13.30-15.30 Lord Edward’s Own Re-enactment Group will be giving demonstrations and information on period weapons and uniforms at the old Courthouse Courtyard.
