Obituary. Captain E. L. Mansfield
The death has taken place at his residence, Red House, Newbridge, of Captain E. L. Mansfield. Deceased, who has been ailing for some time past, was born in Morristown, Naas, and was educated at Stonyhurst and Downside. He fought in the Great War and retired with the rank of Captain in 1917.
An enthusiastic sportsman all his life, he was prominently identified with the world-renowned Punchestown and other racing executives in the county and he rode over the famous racecourse.
He bred many great steeplechasers, including Miss Fugitive, who won the Maiden Plate at Fairyhouse. Up to a few years back, the late Captain Mansfield was a keen follower of the Kildare Hounds, but failing health compelled his retirement.
Deceased, who was aged 65 years, farmed extensively, and he was also the owner of considerable house property. A very sociable and kindly disposed gentleman, his demise will be sincerely regretted. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
The funeral, which was private, took place to Caragh Cemetery on Monday, after Requiem Mass. Rev. Fr. Ryan, C.C., Newbridge, assisted by Very Rev. Mgr. Brophy, P.P., V.G., Newbridge, and Very Rev. Fr. Broughan, officiated at the graveside.
