Kildare Biodiversity Week has been organised by individuals and organisations in the county to develop awareness of the importance of biodiversity and to better understand its value to the local, national and international communities.

The word 'biodiversity' comes from two words, biological and diversity, which, put simply is another way of referring to the variety of life on the planet. Biodiversity is about the variety of plant and animal species and the interaction between them. It is this interaction that is essential for life, giving us all the things we need - clean air, water, agriculture, food and amenity. Humanity’s fate is tightly linked with biological diversity – the variety of life on earth. Biodiversity is essential for sustainable development and human well-being. In short, our own health and wealth is directly linked to the health and wealth of the habitats and species that surround us.

Bridget Loughlin, the Heritage Officer with Kildare County Council says:

"During Biodiversity Week the people of Kildare are invited to get out into Kildare’s Biodiversity, to visit Kildare wild spots, lakes, rivers, bogs, woodlands or to simply enjoy the biodiversity of their back garden”.

A range of events have been organised throughout the county to celebrate Kildare's unique natural heritage.

To celebrate international Biodiversity Day, 22nd May, Solas Bhride and Hermitages Centre has organised a number of events. The day begins with a morning of fun biodiversity games and activities for 7-12 yrs, booking required, followed by talks and presentation on the biodiversity of the Irish countryside and the new Glas Scheme by Catherine Keena, Teagasc Countryside Management Specialist and John Muldowney, Dept of Agriculture Climate Change Division.

During Biodiversity Week people are encouraged to come along to Naas library and hear about the Otters of Naas, pop into the Bog of Allen Nature centre in Lullymore and meet Rua the Red Squirrel while learning about bogs, get up early and take part in the Kildare BirdWatch Dawn Chorus or stay up late for the Dusk Chorus, or jump on the Biodiversity Bus with Kildare Tidy Towns for a tour of some of the wonderful natural heritage sites around Kildare Town.

You can join the Ardclough Tidy Towns in identifying bumble bees or Clane Tidy Towns invite you to become “Wild about Clane". There are many more events across Kildare which will allow people to engage with Kildare’s Biodiversity.

A programme of events is available in all libraries and for full listing of events go to the Kildare County Council website kildare.ie/countycouncil.
