Maynooth Castle, founded in the early 13th century, was the stronghold of the Earls of Kildare. It is a heritage site now open to the public, and is run by the Office of Public Works Heritage Service.

Guided tours are available throughout the day and each tour lasts about 40 minutes. There is an exhibition for self-guiding visitors and the grounds are also free to explore. Includes an exhibition on the history of the Castle and the Fitzgerald family, who emerged as one of the most powerful families in Ireland with Maynooth Castle being one of the largest and richest Earl's houses.
