On the 19th June 2011 Michael D. Higgins won the Labour Party's nomination to run as its candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election.

On the 6th July 2011 ,at Kildare Town's Local History Group's  2011 Giraldus Lecture, Michael D. will give a  talk on the life of KIldare's Senator Michael Smyth.
