Courthouse destroyed by fire

NEWBRIDGE, 4 April 2002: by Brian Byrne. Newbridge Courthouse was destroyed by a fire this morning. The blaze was so intense that the complete interior was gutted, and an adjoining premises also severely damaged.

The blaze broke out around 5am and despite the best efforts of local firemen, the roof collapsed at around 8am. The building was erected by local landowner Eyre Powell in 1858.

It is unlikely that those who used the premises will mourn its destruction, as it has for many years been the subject of complaints by judges, solicitors, and other people brought within its walls.
