Pedestrian bridge badly needed over canal - 'dangerous' situation

RATHANGAN, 8 May 1999: by Brian Byrne.A pedestrian bridge across the canal is urgently required for Rathangan, according to Cmmr Fiona O’Loughlin, a Fianna Fail candidate for both Newbridge Town Commission and Kildare County Council in the June local elections. She told KNN that the current situation where pedestrians have to cross by the bridge on the busy Rathangan to Kildare road is ‘very dangerous’.

“The danger particularly relates to young people from the nearby Vocational School, and they’re building an extension at the moment, so things can only get worse,” she says.

Fiona is the third generation of her family to seek a council seat ... her grandfather was a member of the founding council a century ago, and her father Jimmy is retiring from the authority this month.

Rising house values threaten subsidised tenants

NAAS, 7 May 1999: by Trish Whelan & Brian Byrne. A mother and two young children evicted from their EHB-subsidised private rented accommodation in Naas this week ‘landed in tears’ on Naas UDC councillor Charlie Byrne’s doorstep, and caused him to highlight what he called a ‘disturbing’ trend of rising house values in Naas threatening the positions of such subsidised tenants in private sector accommodation.

“She was appealing to me for help, and one of the youngsters was in floods of tears wanting to go to the toilet and there was nowhere to go,” he said. “It went to my heart - I brought the family into my own house and offered them the facilities and something to eat.”

Cllr Byrne arranged with Naas UDC to provide the family with B&B accommodation for a number of nights pending the resolution of their problem. “When I brought the case to the attention of the UDC, they said they had already given her three nights’ accommodation, and that there had been three other families in the same plight this week” he said. “The matter shows how vulnerable subsidised tenants can be if a house becomes so valuable that the owner can get a better return from private rentals or selling.”

Town Clerk Declan Kirrane told KNN that the family concerned had lodged a housing application with Naas UDC and that they would be ‘considered for any vacancy that would come up, or that might be available at the moment’. He said such a situation is ‘not a serious problem in Naas’ at the moment. “But occasionally throughout the year, people do present themselves as homeless to us and they would generally be single-parent families. We would offer them emergency temporary B&B accommodation until we examine their case.”

On inquiring, Cllr Byrne was informed that there was hostel accommodation available in other towns in Kildare and Carlow, but the woman in this particular case said she did not want to go to a hostel with her children. He said the case also highlighted the need for temporary emergency accommodation in Naas, and he suggested that the old convent building beside the Parish Church would be ideal. “It is currently on offer from the Sisters of Mercy as an adult education centre, and could provide shelter for a number of families at a time on a temporary basis.”

New bill aimed at rogue developers

KILDARE SOUTH, 7 May 1999: A ‘minority’ of developers who leave estates unfinished are giving other developers a bad name, Kildare South Labour TD Jack Wall said yesterday. He was welcoming news that the Parliamentary Labour Party have decided to use their Private Members time next Tuesday to initiate a bill which would include a rule that developers who have failed to complete estates in the past should not be granted new planning permissions.

“I know of several such estates in South Kildare, some of which have been left in a dangerous condition. It is a problem that has been increasing with the upturn in the building economy, and it is a scandal that people, after investing in a new house, are left with unsightly, unfinished and dangerous estates.”

'No access' decision criticised

THE CURRAGH, 7 May 1999: The refusal of the Department of Defence to allow access for a proposed site for a gaelscoil at Lumville on the Curragh has been sharply criticised by Fianna Fail local election candidate Sean Power TD. News of the refusal came from the minister for education and science, Michael Martin TD, in a Dail reply to deputy Power’s representations on progress in relation to Gaelscoil Chill Dara, who also said that he had requested the school authorities to enquire locally regarding alternative access.

“I am not happy with the minister’s refusal,” deputy Power says. “It is an ideal site and it is unfair to ask teachers and pupils to continue to use prefabs for their school buildings.” He added that he has asked the minister for defence, Michael Smith TD, to have the ‘matter examined again’ urgently.

Deirdre sends word from Australia

SYDNEY, 7 May 1999:

Dear Editor,

Just thought I would write a note to congratulate you on your website. I am from Kilcock, Co Kildare and have been looking for a site like this to keep me up to date on the happenings in Kilcock and surrounding areas. So now that I have found it I will be a regular visitor until I return home next Christmas. Thanks!!!

I have been in Australia since January and will be here until next Christmas. I am presently working in The Department of Public Works and Services in Sydney. Though I am from Kilcock, my fathers family are from and live in Naas and Sallins. I am living in the Bondi area of Sydney where there are so many Irish its ridiculous!!!! I feel like I might as well be at home sometimes!

I came out here with my friend, Sheila, who with another two friends were involved in a bad car accident over here in February. You may have heard about it because an Australian man died and the girls were seriously injured. They spent almost two months in hospital here before retuning to Ireland. So as you can imagine, the first couple of months here were pretty bad but I, along with other friends here, are getting back into things now. The Irish really pull together over here.

So, I am now hopefully going to save some money to travel to different places in Australia, then we will be spending a month in the USA on the way home, going to Virginia, L.A and Chicago. So there you go! There are plenty more Kildare people out here who I will tell about your Web Site and I myself will visit again next week!

Slan!!!!!!!!!!

Newbridge superloo IS new - KCC

NEWBRIDGE, 6 May 1999: by Brian Byrne. Fears that Newbridge penny-spenders might have been short-changed by the provision of a SECONDHAND superloo were quickly allayed today when a Kildare County Council spokesman emphatically said that the high-tech convenience ‘is absolutely brand-new and unused’. The convenience has just been erected on site, though a date for its opening has not yet been decided, pending connection to water and sewer services.

Some confusion as to whether the superloo was new arose because it had the name ‘Cobh Urban District Council’ emblazoned on it in both Irish and English. “This was inadvertent,” the spokesman said, “and the supplier has undertaken to rectify the matter.”

He also said there will not be an official opening ceremony. “Some facilities provided by the Council ARE officially opened, but public conveniences do not come into this category,” he said.

There has been no public toilet in Newbridge for the last four years, and the situation has regularly come up at Town Commission meetings, where members reported complaints from pub-owners who said they should get a reduction in rates for furnishing a service which should have been provided by the local authority.

Note: Those waiting patiently for the new facility to open for business should be aware that there is a time limit for ‘spending a (20p) penny’ ... of 20 minutes.

Kildare area Fianna Fail council candidates are introduced

NEWBRIDGE, 6 May 1999: by Brian Byrne. The Fianna Fail candidates for the local elections in the Kildare electoral area were introduced to local press at a function in Keadeen Hotel last evening. Pictured above are Cllr John O’Neill, Breda Connolly, Cmmr Fiona O’Loughlin and Cllr Sean O Fearghaill.

Cllr John O’Neill has been a member of Kildare County Council since 1974. His particular interests have always been in housing and roads and the improvement of Newbridge, where he lives. John recently retired from his job with Kildare County Council and will have more time to devote to his duties as a member of the authority when re-elected.

Breda Connelly of Monasterevin comes from a family long associated with Fianna Fail, the Rowans, and the headliner issue in Monasterevin is the reopening of the railway station, for which there has been a very strong campaign over a number of years.

Fiona O’Loughlin is the daughter of retiring councillor Jimmy O’Loughlin from Rathangan and if she gains her first county council seat her family will have served on the council in three centuries, as her grandfather was a member of the founding council which sat first just over a century ago. A member of Newbridge Town Commission since 1994, Fiona’s particular interests are proper planning for sustainable development, education - particularly education for children with special needs - and childcare.

Cllr Sean O Fearghaill has been a member of KCC since 1985 and particularly represents the interests of Kildare town, where he lives. Current highlight issues include how the 50 acres of the former Magee Barracks will be developed to make up for what he terms the ‘huge loss’ which its ‘unnecessary’ closure means to the town’s economy. “At county level, I hope that on June 11 we will have a team of 25 councillors elected who will challenge the system and push out the boundaries and work very hard to make Kildare a better place to live for everybody.”

Ode to the Overseer (a poem)

JOHNSTOWN, 6 May 1999: Yet another poet has emerged from the ranks of Kildare county councillors. The independent member from Johnstown, Anthony Lawlor, has penned a special ode to the overseers of the roads in the county. Co-incidentally the one piece of ordinary business which was transacted at the recent centenary meeting of Kildare County Council was to pass a motion providing funding for the roads overseer ... an exactly similar exercise had been conducted at the inaugural meeting a hundred years before.

ODE TO THE OVERSEER
The road overseer has been on the go,
for the last hundred years or so.
His first wage packet was just 2/6d
and for that he had all the roads to fix.
A councillor called Cribbin
had sent him on his way
for a pothole to fill out Caragh way.
He’d a horse and dray, and a full load,
travellin’ along the twisty narrow road.
On his way there with his gang of men,
he sees the damn snails headin’
for Pollardstown Fen.
A hundred years have since gone by,
but the problem’s the same, no one’s sure why
- that pothole in Caragh needs fixin’ again.

Power rounds on Fisheries Board, An Taisce

COUNTY HALL, 5 May 1999: by Trish Whelan. “It’s time to let our feelings be known so balanced people will have a say in the future of Kildare,” FF Cllr Paddy Power told a recent meeting of Kildare County Council, launching a stinging attack against the Fisheries Board who claim the water in the River Liffey is polluted (while the County Council say it is not) and who have objected to a development in his home patch of Caragh. His targets also included An Taisce and other bodies whose objections, he said, are holding up some of the major projects in the county ‘for no good reason but what MIGHT happen ...”

During discussions on The Three Rivers Report he said he had been ‘interested in Pollardstown Fen before An Taisce heard about it’ and he criticized the Regional Fisheries Board which ‘seem to be selective with their objections.’ “It’s time to say this when we hear of An Taisce and some ‘nit wit’ from Cork objecting to things. One person is enough to hold up the Kildare By-Pass. It’s time for us to let our feelings be known so balanced people will have a say in the future of Kildare,” he said. In full flight, the former defence minister added: “This Council had lost enough with a Minister putting a damper on our development plans for a year without bothering to read them.”

FG Cllr Sean Reilly said people with worries should talk them out with developers instead of taking ‘a high-handed attitude of appeal’ which he said was not the correct way to make progress or make friends. “We seem to be swamped with experts who don’t seem to want to listen to the other’s point of view,” he said. FF Cllr Gerry Brady said the Fisheries Board are ‘being totally irresponsible’ in deciding to arbitrally object to any development of five houses or more in the county’. “I believe we should stand up to good powerful lobbying, once and for all,” he said.

Kilcock school opens Hall of Fame

KILCOCK,5 May 1999: by Brian Byrne. A recent open day in St Joseph’s Boys National School in Kilcock has already resulted in an increase in the number of students enrolling for the next term, and will thus help to avoid the prospect of the school losing two teachers. The school presently accommodates over 190 students.

The Open Day was organised by the Board of Management of the school under the direction of its chairman Cllr Liam Doyle, and among the elements was the institution of a Hall of Fame of past pupils and two of these have hung mementoes in the school - Cmmdt Gerry Mullins of the Army Equitation School and Kildare footballer Davy Dalton.

“A list of their achievements was read out on the day and this was followed by a fun game of football for fathers of students ... wearing wellingtons for the Wellington Cup,” says Liam Doyle, who is NOT running for Kildare County Council this year. “I’d like to express my thanks to the members of the school’s BOM, Parents’ Council and parents for their wonderful support and cooperation. The local community spirit will continue and this should ensure the continued viability of the school.”

Famous Naas pub on the market

NAAS, 5 May 1999: by Brian Byrne. After 26 years in the business in Naas, Denis Curry is selling his Manor Inn, a favourite food and drink spot for many people from a wide variety of backgrounds throughout County Kildare. The premises goes for auction on May 19.

“None of my children are interested, and I’ve decided that it’s time I got out,” says Denis, who bought the bar originally from Benny McTernan. “Truth to tell, I really don’t have the heart for it any more, and if you don’t have that you shouldn’t stay in the business.“

Denis says the pub business has changed quite dramatically in recent years, with the advent of chains run by specialist operators. “There’s still a place for somebody who wants to develop and maintain a niche business, but overall it has become a heavy investment area.”

He says he has no immediate plans for the future.

Any Lazenbys in Kilmeague?

5 May 1999:

Dear Editor,

What a wonderful web site you have. It is a great way for family and friends to stay connected. I am hoping that someone reading this may be able to help me in my family search.

I am looking for information on any Lazenbys, Lezenbys, or Lizenbys in and around the town of Allenwood, Kildare. My husband's Great Great Grandfather [Able], owned a farm somewhere near Dublin. We had been told that he died when he fell upon a pitch fork sometime around 1870/1871(??). His wife Margaret then took their two children William and Anne and moved to the United States. Her name was changed in the process and that has caused us many problems in our search for any information on Able in Ireland, and in the search for the origin of our name.

We have since learned that our name was originally spelled Lazenby or Lezenby, which is why we could never find Able listed anywhere in Ireland. We know now that his farm was in or near Kilmeage, Allenwood, County Kildare.

We are now hoping to find death records and land records for him with this new information. However we are still at a bit of a dead end on this and are desperately searching for anyone who may have information that could help us. We heard that there were other Lazenbys in the area - their names were John, William and Matthew (to name a few). Were any of these men related to Able? ... and if so, how? What was Able's father's name? Is the land still owned by the Lazenbys? ... and so on. These are just a few of our questions, so If you have any information on our family, PLEASE contact me by E-mail at Lizard@NorthLink.Net

Thank You

Janette [Lazenby]

New life for Naas landmark mill?

NAAS, 4 May 1999: by Trish Whelan. The provision of a public museum area is part of a planning application which has been made to Naas UDC for a development at Leinster Mills on the canal at Osberstown. The project, by Springwood Ltd, also includes the conversion of some of the building to nine townhouses and 10 apartments, and the demolition of part of the Mill, a listed building, which was a major source of local employment in earlier times.

The application would involve the refurbishment of the Mill and the courtyard scheme of apartments and townhouses alongside, intended to complement and provide continuity in the listed Mill and its setting, according to the architects.

The developer would provide the local authority with a section of the ground floor of the mill for use as a local museum. Any material or contents of the mill, requiring relocation as a result of the proposed works, and not being reused in the scheme, will be made available for inclusion in the museum.

In correspondence received by the UDC, Sean Sourke of An Taisce says it is not clear exactly what buildings are proposed to be demolished and his association would strongly recommend that this development should not interfere with or detract from the listed buildings or character of the complex. “A stand of trees north of the mill is preserved in the town development plan and we are anxious that they are not interfered with by the development.”

Major refurbishment projects for Curragh Camp

CURRAGH CAMP, 4 May 1999: by Brian Byrne. The Department of Defence is to seek tenders for £20 million worth of major projects at the Curragh Military Camp, including swimming pool facilities, a new dining complex, accommodation for officers and other ranks, mess facilities, a combat support college and a combat service support college.

The projects are to be carried out under the Barracks Reinvestment Programme and the process of appointing consultants for planning and design of the works is in progress, defence minister Michael Smith told Deputy Sean Power in a written Dail reply. He also noted that £3.2 million will be spent in 1999 of a total of £8.7 million provided for the provision of a new armoury, renovation of a dining complex and other works under contracts placed last year.

Traffic calming budget sought

LEIXLIP, 4 May 1999: by Brian Byrne. Cllr Catherine Murphy is seeking a special allocation for traffic calming and repairs to housing estate roads. This follows her success in having Kildare County Council agree to a special budget allocation for footpaths £150,000 of which was allocated this year.

Cllr Murphy says there is a ‘large and growing demand’ for traffic calming, but funding for such measures comes out of the road restoration budget and as such is ‘almost regarded as a luxury item’. “Housing estate roads compare even less favourably than minor county roads in the Council’s order of priorities,” she says. "Setting up a special budget is the only way these issues will be satisfactorily addressed. Even if my proposals are successful it will take some years to address the backlog of work in these areas."

A festival week of festivals

KILDARE GENERAL, 3 May 1999: by Brian Byrne. This last week has been one of festivals in County Kildare, from the festival of racing at Punchestown through the week-long Bealtaine event in Newbridge and the pubs festival in Naas to the Ballymore festivities that ranged from an open-air ceidhli to the performance by the Dunlavin Youth Orchestra (above) conducted by Dorly O’Sullivan. During Bealtaine, the Celts took over Newbridge (below). It was all part of the ‘craic of Kildare’, you might say.
