Kildare Library & Arts Services

The Local Studies Department

The Local Studies Department forms an integral part of the County Library service and ultimately, in partnership with Genealogy and Archives, is an integral part of the Riverbank Cultural Campus.

The Local Studies Collection has been extended and is located in the History and Family Research Centre. It is the focal point for local history research in County Kildare for historians and enthusiasts alike.

As well as containing a wonderful collection of secondary source material the Local Studies Department includes many original gems such as:

  • Griffith's Valuation,
  • Original 6 inch Ordnance Survey Maps of the County,
  • Tithe Applotment Books,
  • Photographs from the Lawrence, Eason and Valentine Collections,
  • Rental Books of the Marquis of Drogheda and the Verschoyle Estates etc.
  • Newspapers on microfilm in the Collection date to 1763.
