Kilcock Celtic 2 Kilcullen AFC 1 (KDUL U16s)

Sat March 27th -This game started at a hectic pace. The visitors were first to attack and won a free kick just inside the Kilcock half in the first minute.  Mark Daly pumped the ball into the danger area but the ball was headed well clear by Cathal McCabe. Celtic countered and Conor Dully released Cian McIntyre in on goal, however the opportunity was denied by an intercepting tackle by Darren Rooney. See full report in Match Reports section

The home team settled into a pattern of neat passing football and began to create a number of attaching opportunities. After twenty minutes Dane Hoban won the ball outside his own area and attacked up the right wing. He passed infield to Leon Glennon who immediately switched play back out to the right wing and released Ian Mooney in on goal. Mooney dribbled his way into the box before shooting, the left footed effort whizzed the just wrong side of the far post.

Two minutes later Kilcock Adam Leonard won a throw-in on the left wing. From the throw Neil Vorster sent the ball into the visitor’s six yard box, where Ryan O’Connell headed back for Evan Comerford to volley goal-ward and produced a good block save from Sean O’Halloran.

Kilcullen always looked dangerous on the counter attack and the forward pair of O’Connor and Pere worked hard to keep the home defence on their toes. Dafydd Jones was outstanding for Kilcock and was first to react and snuff out any opportunities

Shortly after the interval the visitors capitalised on a long ball to the edge of Kilcock’s box, O’Connor won the race to the ball and bent his excellent shot in at the near post to give his team the lead.

Kilcock had to up their game and pushed forward at every opportunity. They won a succession of corners which all produced goal mouth scrambles. The introduction of Diarmuid Ryan and Niall Walker gave Kilcock an attacking impetus and soon paid dividends. Walker was first to a Kilcullen clearance and released Diarmuid Ryan out on the right wing, when he got in the area and picked out Ryan O’Connell on the penalty spot. O’Connell turned neatly and slotted the ball home for a deserved equaliser.

The home team were dominant now and continued to chase for a winner. Their efforts were rewarded in the last five minutes when D. Ryan found Leon Glennon in the penalty box and he squeezed the ball past a crowd of players to give Celtic the lead.

After the restart Kilcullen went in search of an equaliser but were hit on the counter-attack and again D. Ryan got in on goal again, his low shot whistled inches wide of the left upright.
