Kildare Pensioners benefit - Paul Kelly (Mar 29)

Councillor Paul Kelly has welcomed the commitment to pensioners made by Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD, which will see an increase in the old age pension to a minimum of 200 euros a week should Fianna Fáil be returned to Government.

An Taoiseach made the announcement in his Presidential Address to the 66th Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis.

Councillor Kelly said:  “The commitment of this Government to pensioners is unparalleled.  In 1997 we promised to ensure decent pensions and we have delivered on this promise.  Pensions have increased by 50% since 1997 to 147.50 euros”.

“The Taoiseach has said that for the future we will set a new minimum of 200 euros per week to make sure that all our older people have the support they deserve. With 6,000 pensioners in Kildare, it will mean benefits for many people”.

“Furthermore we are committed to introducing a “homemakers pension” for the spouse in the home.  This homemaker’s pension which will be paid at the full old-age non-contributory pension rate will give recognition to the work done by homemakers”, Councillor Kelly said.

“Already we have put aside over 7 Billion euros in the National Pensions Fund to meet the costs of pensions in the future. It is important that we use this fund only for what it was intended for – to secure and protect the pensions of future generations”, concluded Councillor Kelly.
