St Mary's girls are all-Ireland champs

NAAS, 25 March 2002: by Trish Whelan. Naas schools scored a double at the recent Boys and Girls Volleyball Cadette A All-Ireland finals with Naas CBS and St Mary’s College winning their respective categories in the Cadette A finals.

The finals took place in Mountmellick Community School in February. Almost 20 teams had participated.

In their final, Naas CBS beat Drumshambo Community College 25/13. 27-25 to take the boys title.

St Mary’s College took on Middleton, Cork, fighting back after losing the first set 10-25 to take the second set 25/20 and the all-important third set 15/10 to take the title.

Coach Marian Moloney is especially proud of the squad of Claire Brady, Anita Dowling, Jennifer Hickey, Lisa Rohan, Alison Keane, Eimear O’Neill, Maeve Whelan, Nicole Gunning, Aoife Carroll, Ilena O’Driscoll, Aoife Hoban and Ruth Stafford.

The school’s Cup Squad will play their first round match against Mountmellick Community School and the Junior A team have gone through to the All-Ireland junior finals, to be hosted in St Mary’s College on April 19.
