Investment in education must continue - Paul Kelly (Apr 17)

Fianna Fáil candidate in Kildare North, Cllr. Paul Kelly said he would campaign to ensure more investment in adult education.  Speaking at a Fianna Fáil meeting in Maynooth, he said “over the last few years, the Government has kept Adult Education high on its agenda.  We see it as vital in promoting social inclusion and the development of the individual”.

“As part of Budget 2002, over 16 million euros has been allocated to adult literacy, which is a fivefold increase on 1997 funding.  Today there are almost 19,000 adult literacy students country wide, while almost 23,5000 people are getting help in their homes each week through the TV series “Read Write Now”, “ Paul commented.

“The Government has also established a National Adult Learning Council to advise on policy and promote co-operation between various interested groups.  In addition, a “Back to Education Initiative” providing 4000 extra part time places in further education, and extra Community educational facilitators to support new community based learning groups are being provided.  This Government is committed to ensuring that we provide adequate resources for adult education.  I will vigorously support this policy and make sure it is continued into the future, as part of our drive to promote social inclusion”.
