Planning alliance 'will consider court action' over oral hearings

NAAS, 9 April 1999: by Brian Byrne. The Naas Planning Alliance intends to challenge in court the procedures carried out by Naas UDC over the oral hearings on the town's Draft Development Plan, if they decide they have been incorrectly carried out. Already a spokesperson for the alliance has criticised as ‘extremely unfair’ the fact that letters notifying objectors were hand-delivered to many homes on Good Friday for hearings which began on Tuesday of this week.

Over 3,000 requests for oral hearings were submitted by the NPA and the Sallins Road Action Group in the last two weeks. Cllr Timmy Conway told KNN that the first 100 hearings were scheduled for Tuesday, but he said ‘only four people turned up’. Mary Cahill of the NPA said that many people were probably on an Easter holiday and wouldn’t be aware that their hearings had been scheduled so quickly.

“The council must be working hell-for-leather to make it difficult for people who want oral hearings,” she told KNN. “Nobody is being given any leeway in the time set for them, and everybody is only getting 10 minutes. That said, I’ve logged a lot of phone calls for people who do intend to appear and make their objections to the plan.”

Ms Cahill also strongly criticised town clerk Declan Kirrane for his comment that the petitions of objection ‘only represented a small amount of the town’. “Apart from the fact that it is not his place to make such comments, as he is a paid official of the local authority, if you exclude those under 18 from the town’s population figure, 3,000 petitioners represent a third of the rest,” she said. “In any survey, that would be a very strong representation.”

Goodbye to a famous Naas landmark

NAAS, 8 April 1999: by Trish Whelan. Siobhan Hanrahan closes the doors of her famous landmark cafe tomorrow with what she says is a ‘heavy heart’ ... but after 40 years of being involved in the family business she said it was ‘time to take a break’. She told KNN: “I’m going to take a year off and enjoy life.”

It is understood the extensive premises has been bought by the Spar supermarket group, and so it is unlikely that it will ever again be a tearooms or cafe. But Siobhon is very pleased that almost the entire current staff have been already offered jobs locally. “Indeed, one of them, confectioner Orla Douglas, will be starting up her own confectionery business in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, in the near future.”

A sign in her window for this past week thanked all her customers who have been served in the restaurant ‘for their courtesy and consideration’. She also honoured ‘a fine house that has been a safe home to my family and myself’.

Black belt gains osteopathy qualification

ATHGARVAN & NAAS, 8 April 1999: by Trish Whelan & Brian Byrne. Three-and-a-half years of commitment and study will result later this month in the awarding of a BSc degree in Osteopathy from Oxford University to an Athgarvan man now living in Naas. For Mick Nooney, who is also a black belt in three different areas of martial arts, it the fulfillment of a long-held dream.

“I wasn’t quite prepared for the volume of work involved when I set out to do it ... it was a complete shock, in fact. But it was well worth the effort and now I’m in a position to help people in pain who often can’t benefit from conventional medicine.”

As well as the study, Mick was required to spend 1,260 hours in practical apprenticeship with a qualified osteopath in the UK, arranged through the university. “The discipline is very well recognised by the medical profession in England, though the story is quite different here,” says Mick, who explains osteopathy as ‘treating the whole self’ for ailments such as those often erroneously described as ‘slipped discs’. “While pains can often show in particular areas, the sources are sometimes in other parts of the body and it is my job to find the root of the problem, what’s causing the pain and treat it from there.”

Much of the work of an osteopath is dealing with sports injuries, something which Mick would understand well from his interest in martial arts. He is a karate instructor in Naas and Newbridge, and has a world-class referee qualification which has brought him to many parts of Europe, including Germany, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, France, Spain, England and at home.

He sat his finals last February and will receive his degree on April 19th in a ceremony at Oxford. He intends to follow through on further studies at a later stage. He is available for consultations at 086 2427494 or 045 896597.

Twinning meeting plans for German visitors to Newbridge

NEWBRIDGE, 7 April 1999: by Brian Byrne. Newbridge will host up to 20 people from its German twin town, Bad Lippspringe at the end of this month in conjunction with the Bealtaine Festival. A number of them will be using the town as a base to have an extended holiday in Ireland, according to PRO Peter O’Neill. A public meeting last evening discussed the organisation of the visit and the plans for a return trip to Germany later in the year. Pictured (top) at last night’s meeting are twinning committee chairman Ray O’Brien, Peter O’Neill, secretary June Kelly, and treasurer Vera O’Neill.

“The schools in particular have benefited from the twinning over the last three years,” says Peter, who led a Newbridge visit to Bad Lippspringe last October. “There is quite a remarkable interest amongst the youth, notably from the Patrician College, Dominican College and the Holy Family School. Part of the reason is the growing interest in Germany as a language.” That interest is evidenced by the fact that German national Jürgen Franz has been kept busy for the last three years teaching German in Newbridge Colege. He is pictured here with Aileen O’Brien at last night’s meeting.

It is envisaged the a programme of work exchange opportunities between the two towns will be devloped further in the coming years. Already, one young woman from Bad Lippspringe is working with a firm of solicitors in Newbridge, while a Newbridge person has also worked in the German town for a period. Newbridge’s twin is in population terms similar to the Co Kildare town, though spread out over a larger area.

The next trip by Newbridge people is planned for October, during the German town’s main town festival, the Stadfest.

Gardai called over bus stop row

NAAS, 7 April 1999: Gardai were called yesterday to the new location for the bus stop in Naas, after a shopkeeper remonstrating with waiting bus passengers was jostled and abused. The move of the bus stop from its original place outside Naas post office has raised the ire of shopkkpers and publican Ger Farragher, who say it is not their business to provide bus shelters.

Mr Farragher, owner of John Kavanaghs pub (see previous story below) told KNN that a neighbouring shopkeeper, Ann Hanratty, was abused when she asked people to move outside the doorway to her shop, while he himself was also verbally abused in a similar situation. He says he has taken legal advice and will be fighting Naas UDC over the issue 'all the way'.

Palmerstown Stud sale completed

JOHNSTOWN, 7 April 1999: Palmerstown Stud outside Naas has been sold to Citywest-based property developer Jim Mansfield, following a High Court decision in favour of his original contract to purchase. According to Mr Mansfield, the matter was finally ‘wrapped up’ in the early days of last week, and he now intends to look at all the options for the stud’s future development.

Mr Mansfield, who bought the property from Mrs Biddle Brewster, said last week that ‘such options are many’. He is on record as considering the provision of luxury hotel on the property, as well as a championship 18-hole golf course and a world-class stud. He has also suggested that it could be an ideal site for the building of a Formula 1 race track, capable of attracting one of the richest and exciting sports to Ireland.

Traffic chaos continues today

BLACKCHURCH, 7 April 1999: This was the traffic situation on the Naas Road yesterday at lunchtime, with a two-mile backlog because of road works at Blackchurch. According to AA Roadwatch, the situation is expected to continue today.

Meanwhile, South Dublin County Council says it hopes to complete the works on the Rathcoole interchange very soon. Due to the closure of one of the contracting firms of the project, it is expected that the overall cost will have gone beyond the tender price.

Bus stop move raises publican's ire over UDC 'hypocrisy'

NAAS, 6 April 1999: by Trish Whelan & Brian Byrne. A Naas publican is furious at what he says is ‘hypocrisy of the highest order’ on the part of his local authority - because they first list his building for its shopfront’s architectural merit ... and then plant a dirty great bustop outside it!

“And I mean ‘dirty’,” says Ger Farragher, owner of Kavanagh’s Pub on Main Street Naas. “It’s a big white blob of dirty-looking, ugly paint outside my door.” And what’s more, Ger is also concerned because under the Litter Act, he is responsible for clearing the messes left by waiting bus passengers on the street outside. “Have I any rights as a ratepayer? I feel I’m being trampled on ... why didn’t it go outside the Post Office, Town Hall, or Courthouse, which are the responsibility of state bodies?”

Ger purchased the property five years ago, and has been forced to pay £7,000 in levies to Naas UDC towards car parking. “Now I can’t even pull up outside my own pub any more,” he groans. He’s also worried that he could even lose deliveries of supplies if trucks can’t find a place to park outside.

The matter came to a head on Good Friday morning when Naas people found that the parking space lines on Main Street had been changed overnight. In addition to the bus stop being moved to in front of Ger’s pub, the nose-in parking across the road outside the main banks had been switched to parallel parking, with the loss of a significant number of car spaces.

“Since work began on refurbishing the nearby Post Office and footpath improvement works, my business and shops around have endured eight months of horror,” Ger adds. “The bus stop, previously outside the Post Office, was first moved down outside a high-class women’s shop, who suffered terrible grief because of the dirt involved ... and now it has come further down to outside my premises.”

The difficulty would be particularly noticeable during his lunch trade, with people waiting for buses blocking access and light to his premises. “In addition, the amount of sweet papers and chewing gum which has to be picked up after the queues have gone is absolutely disgusting ... and I could be brought to court if I don’t clean up after them.”

Ger claims that the whole planning of the bus stop matter has been done on a piecemeal basis. “Nobody has thought it out. I have been in touch with the town clerk, who only last Wednesday assured me that the whole situation is only temporary, and that ‘a home will be found for the bus stop’ when the footpath improvements have been completed. But they’ve just spent a fortune putting down new parking lines, so as far as I’m concerned, the writing is already on the ground.”

Ger says he’s ‘a prisoner in his own premises’. “If you keep quiet, these things can be landed outside your door. I’ve taken legal advice, and I intend to fight this all the way.”

NAAS, 5 April 1999: by Brian Byrne. The turnout to the annual Naas Easter Parade yesterday was ‘absolutely fantastic’ organiser Cllr Willie Callaghan said last night. “The weather was with us right up to the end of the parade, and I couldn’t believe the number of people who turned out.”

Some 76 floats took part in the parade, as well as a large number of marching groups. Upgraded Newbridge sports facilities officially launched

NEWBRIDGE, 4 April 1999: by Brian Byrne. “This is setting a new direction in Kildare County Council’s involvement in leisure,” the council’s chairman Cllr Jim Reilly said at the official opening yesterday of the renovated Sports Centre in Newbridge. The launch of the new facilities, he said, marks the completion of a programme of major improvements designed to offer the best to health-conscious and sport-loving people, at competitive cost.

The new facilities include an international-standard sprung floor in the centre’s main hall, suitable for high-class local and regional competition in basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and indoor tennis. In addition, a top-class aerobics studio has been installed on the first floor the centre, alongside a ‘Millennium Fitness’ studio which has state-of-the-art fitness equipment and training facilities. Professionally qualified staff at the centre can design a personalised fitness programme for each customer.

“The centre caters for people of every means,” facility manager Niall Raftery told KNN. “The membership is very reasonable, and we have special programmes to cater for individual population segments, including older people.” Kildare County Council’s leisure programme manager Ray Bonar said the opening of the new facilities is part of an overall developing strategy for the council’s involvement in enhancing leisure and fitness services across the county.

Pictured (top) are Niall Raftery, Cllr Jim Reilly, and Ray Bonar. Above left is Newbridge town commissioner Fiona O’Loughlin trying out some of the fitness equipment; and (below left) recreation assistant Linda Maguire showing visitor Dermot Earley how to pump iron, while in the main hall there's a judo display in progress.
