Shinkins runs first season 400m

NEWBRIDGE, 24 April 2002: by Bill Trapman. Newbridge-born athlete Karen Shinkins will run her first outdoor 400m of the season on the French island of Martenique on Saturday. The event, which will be followed by a second race on the island on Saturday week, is one of a series of races to prepare her for the European Championships in Munich in August.

Last week in Atlanta, she achieved a lifetime best 23.94 seconds for the 200m in her first race of the outdoor season in the US. It was also her first race since winning a bronze medal in the 400 metres in Vienna.

Coach Paul Doyle says she is capable of getting 'very close' to the Irish record as she sharpens up closer to the Munich event. She will need to be running close to 50 seconds to challenge for a medal there.
