Demands grass cutting contract

MAYNOOTH, 8 April 2002: by Bill Trapman. A demand for the immediate awarding of a grass-cutting contract by Kildare County Council has been made by Cllr John McGinley. He made his call at Thursday's meeting of Leixlip Area councillors, when told that the contract for cutting public green areas had not yet been given out.

The electoral areas of Leixlip and Celbridge have 100,000 euros for parks maintenance this year and Cllr McGinley submitted a quotation on behalf of Maynooth Tidy Towns Committee for the maintenance of the public green areas in Maynooth six weeks ago. "However, the Council took no action," Cllr McGinley says. "Principally because, for some peculiar reason, responsibility for the Parks Department function has been given to the Corporate Centre of KCC."

Cllr McGinley said that the first cuts should have taken place a month ago and he demanded that the contracts be awarded without any further delay.

£250,000 was allocated for such grass cutting in 2001 and a similar amount for 2002, but only £50,000 was spent in 2001 because the Council did not award the contracts to anyone. Cllr McGinley does not want the same thing to happen this year.

"It is unlikely that any other utility in the world would handle its business in this manner and I want grass cutting contracts for Maynooth, Leixlip, Celbridge and Straffan awarded immediately in order to assist the voluntary efforts of the Tidy Towns Committees."
