Pilot recycling scheme launched

LEIXLIP, 12 April 2002: by Bill Trapman. A pilot recycling initiative launched in Leixlip will provide special bins for the collection of dry recyclable materials to 4,200 houses and seven schools.

Newsprint, light cardboard, steel and aluminium cans will be collected initially, and plastic will be added in the near future. The special bins will be collected once a month and taken to a recycling centre in Dublin.

Oxigen Ltd will operate the service, which will be reviewed after six months. Kildare County Council intends to extend it to other major towns in the county.

The cost of the initiative in Leixlip will be 300,000 euros for 12 months, including the cost of the bins. Funding has been provided by Intel, Kildare County Council, and REPAK.

County Kildare produces over 100,000 tons of waste a year.
