Plea to defer pool closure

KILDARE NORTH, 18 April 2002: by Bill Trapman. A plea has been made to the management of Stewarts Hospital Foundation to defer a plan to end all adult and children’s swimming classes at the hospital’s pool from 1 July.

The foundation also proposes to end all swimming club, parent and child sessions, aqua aerobics, water safety classes and leisure club facilities.

At present some 1,500 swimmers use the facilities each week, including many from the Kildare North area.

The Labour TD for the area, Emmet Stagg, has written to Maura Donovan, CEO of the foundation, asking for a deferral of the plan until a local authority pool for North Kildare has been secured.

A draft study currently with the county manager will identify a site for a swimming pool in the north of the county. The manager has given a commitment to ‘redress the balance’ of such facilities for the area.
